Teaching Philosophy
As I continue to gain experience in the field of education I strive to provide a classroom environment in which students feel comfortable asking questions, challenging each other as well as myself, and learn through activities rather than lecture. I strive to make the class relevant and accessible, yet challenging and provoking. The goal is to present them with a familiar idea and learn to question it, examine its rhetoric, and form our own analysis. Too often the teacher plays an expert’s role, imparting knowledge and wisdom onto the students. Although I possess more specific based knowledge that will benefit the students, I am also very aware of the fact that each of them has something unique to contribute. Each student walks into the classroom at a different level of preparedness, from a different background, and most importantly at a different level of enthusiasm. With a high emphasis on revision, the students will hone their writing skills through multiple drafts.
It is my job as an educator to tailor my teaching style to the student as an active learner and a participant, rather than a sponge absorbing all that I say only to regurgitate the information back. By introducing different ways of conveying information whether it is group work, presentations, or using visual aids, I hope to channel their natural curiosity to life-long learning. Originally inspired by my own professors to pursue a career in higher education, I learned from their example of what works and what does not. I strive to be as enthusiastic, knowledgeable and approachable as they were to me. The students should leave the classroom being more self-reliant thinkers, more ethical citizens who question what they are presented and are able to analyze it better than they could prior to my class.
